My First Punk Gig - Derek’s Tale

A gay performer reflects on his experiences in Glasgow’s punk scene as he overcame prejudice to find his tribe, and how punk has been a source of empowerment in this present day.

Derek’s Tale focuses on queer performer Derek McLuckie’s reflections on his coming-of-age experiences in Glasgow’s punk scene in the seventies. It has now been accepted for ten film festivals as well as been broadcast on three community TV stations as part of Brighton’s FilmPride TV Festival.

And it has not only won Best Short Film at Berlin’s 2023 ‘Too Drunk to Watch’ Punkfilmfest, but also received an honorary mention at the Texas-based Reel Rhythm Music and Film festival, a nomination from the West Lothian Film Festival. In December 2024 Derek’s Tale won Best Student Film at the European Union Film Awards 2024!

The first episode of My First Punk Gig, in which two contributors, Jonzip of Glasgow band The Zips and Tony Gaughan of punk memorabilia and hub ‘Blitzkrieg Shop’ reflected on their first punk gig was a resounding success with hundreds of punk fans tuning in to watch the YouTube Channel, and this film provided the blueprint for the second episode.

And investigations are still under way to see if a third episode can be made…hold onto your mohawks!
